In preparation for my trip, I have been reading "My Life by Golda Meir". I highly recommend it! Golda Meir's life is an amazing story of unshakeable determination, courage, and doing the next right thing.
The story of the declaration of the state of Israel at the close of WWII is an amazing story of the meaning of "Covenant." God is in a covenant relationship with Israel, His eternal promise to Abraham stands, none other could have brought Israel through such a time.
When Israel declared it's statehood and the declaration of independence was signed, enemies stood poised to sweep her into the sea. From the south, Egypt; from the north, Lebanon and Syria; from the east, Jordan and Iraq; all had well equipped, trained, and motivated armies aligned on the borders and they all attacked. Israel, a poorly equipped, ill trained, but reliant on God rag tag force were able to stand and prevail. Their victory was biblical in its proportion.
In the midst of war and the complexities of nation building, Israel was the only nation on earth willing to accept the mass immigration of a traumatized, wounded, and weary people. In a span of 3 years Israel absorbed immigrants from:
- Cyprus 25,000 Jews
- Germany & Austria 75,000 Jews
- Turkey 33,000 Jews
- Czechoslovkia 60,000 Jews
- Bulgaria 37,000 Jews
- Yugoslavia 7,000 (all that were left after the Holocaust)
- China 5,000 Jews
- Morocco, Tunis, & Algiers 35,000 Jews
- Poland 28,000 Jews
- Rumania 88,000 Jews
- Hungary 3,000 per month for 3 years
- Iraq 121,000 Jews
Put this into the context of a nation of 750,000 inhabitants welcoming the migration. The challenges are staggering..."God has provision we know not of, more than we could ask or imagine", has new meaning to me!
